It’s a small (social media) world after all
· 12.02.08 ·Yesterday, Nisha suggested that I check out entrepreneur Jun Loayza’s blog. I commented on a post, he sent me an email, I checked out his Twitter โ all standard internet fiend behavior. Then I saw that he’d @replied Ben, another friend of mine.

Knowing that Ben and I also shared a mutual friend named Charles, naturally, I clicked on the video to see if it was the same Charles. And what do you know, the actual video interview was one I’d already watched through Charles’ Facebook two weeks ago.

And that, my friends, is social media. Pretty crazy stuff, right?
At the same time, it got me thinking: Maybe all of us “social media types” are just a bunch of people talking to ourselves. It reminded me of a post I read awhile ago about the social media echo chamber. How much value are we really adding to the blogosphere if the only people who are listening to us talk about how important blogging and Twittering are ones who are already doing it?
Maybe it’s not such a bad thing that my blog isn’t defined by a niche. That it enjoys the company of both tween girls and old men (sorry, I always pick on ya’ll, but you illustrate my point the best), because hey, maybe I’m actually reaching people who would never go searching for or subscribe to the kinds of blogs I read, like ProBlogger or Chris Brogan. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 10 people who have joined Twitter from reading my blog alone, and I don’t even talk about it THAT often. (OK, I do, but it could be worse.)
Sure, the people who dig social media might be the ones who “get it.” Yeah, we’re networking and having conversations and connecting to the “influencers” of the web. But at the end of the day, we have to remember to get out of our bubble… because there are still 2304928049823048324 more people on the internet who need to shown exactly how to join the (otherwise incestuous) party.
